Retentis® is a wood-based water reservoir made from lignin, a byproduct of the pulp industry.
It improves the soil structure, increases soil organic matter, water holding capacity nutrient storage and availability to plants.
The key feature of Retentis® is its origin as a by-product of the wood processing industry , namely “lignin”. Lignin is obtained from the Pulp and Paper Industry
Wood generally is made up of approximately 40% cellulose, hemicelluloses (30%) and 30% lignin. Hemicelluloses are used in biorefineries, while lignin is usually considered a low value product or waste product.
Retentis® uses this excess lignin as a raw material, allowing reducing carbon by putting it into the soil.
The use of lignin as a water reservoir is therefore not only resource-saving, but also helps to close the material cycle and contribute towards circular bioeconomy.
